Security dog services: what a handler team brings to your site
A security dog handler is an SIA-licensed officer who works with a trained security dog as a single unit. The handler controls the dog at all times, and the dog adds senses no person has. Dogs pick up scent and sound well beyond what an officer can see or hear, so a team can find someone hiding in a yard, a stack of materials or a dark building far faster than an officer searching alone.
The second benefit is deterrence. Most people who plan to steal or cause damage choose the easiest target. A marked vehicle, clear signage and a handler walking a guard dog around the perimeter tell them this site is not it. That is why many clients use dog teams on the nights and weekends when a site is most exposed.

Guard dogs deployed to NASDU and BS 8517 standards
Using guard dogs on a commercial site carries legal and welfare responsibilities. The Guard Dogs Act 1975 requires a guard dog to be under the control of a capable handler or properly secured, with warning notices at entrances. BS 8517-1 is the British Standard code of practice for the training and deployment of security dogs, and we work to it alongside NASDU requirements.

How we deploy a dog handler team

Site assessment
We look at the layout, entry points and hazards so the handler knows the ground and we can plan safe patrol routes and a secure place for the dog.
Deployment
A marked vehicle arrives with a handler and dog team. Signage goes up and patrols begin at the agreed times, day or night.
Reporting and review
Patrols and incidents are logged and reported back to you. As the risk changes we adjust hours, add officers or combine the team with CCTV.
LAYERED SECURITY
Combining guard dogs with guards, patrols and CCTV
A dog team rarely works in isolation. On larger sites it often sits alongside static security guards who manage the gate while the handler covers the perimeter. Where full-time cover is not needed, a handler can join our mobile patrols and visit at random times.
Many clients also pair dog units with monitored CCTV towers. The cameras watch the whole site, and when something is detected a handler and dog can be sent to deal with it in person. It is a cost-effective way to keep a physical response available without paying for someone on site every hour.

What is the difference between a security dog and a guard dog?
People use the terms interchangeably. Legally, the Guard Dogs Act 1975 covers any dog used to protect premises, and it must be under the control of a handler or secured. At Pride K9 every security dog works with its own SIA-licensed handler, so the dog is never left loose on a site. The team is NASDU approved and deployed to BS 8517-1.
What is the difference between K9 security, canine security and a security dog unit?
Nothing. They are different names for the same service: a trained security dog working with a licensed handler. You will see it advertised as K9 security, canine security, a security dog unit, a dog handler team or guard dog security, and we use those terms interchangeably. What matters is that the handler holds an SIA licence and that the dog and handler are trained and assessed together to NASDU standards and work in line with BS 8517.
Are your dog handlers SIA licensed?
Yes. Every handler holds a valid SIA licence and is vetted before being deployed. Our dogs and handlers are also NASDU approved, and Pride K9 is a NASDU Associate Company Member. That combination means the person on your site is licensed to work in security and has been assessed as competent to control a working dog.
Will a security dog be a risk to my staff or visitors?
The dog stays under its handler's control throughout the shift and warning signs are placed at entrances as the law requires. Handlers plan patrols around any staff or visitors on site and keep the dog at a safe distance. Our dogs are trained to work calmly around people, so the team adds reassurance rather than alarm.
